Scene at Setojuku Hai (Setojuku Competition)

Fundamental Principles
At Setojuku, Karate is taught in the spirit of "Budo" (the Way of the Warrior), not as street-fighting system. Our goal is to pursue the true meaning of living as a human being through Karate.

Practicing our techniques and developing our skills in Karate, are excellent ways to release daily stress and uplift one's spirit. At the same time, one will be able to learn how to strengthen one's mind, and learn the importance of self-discipline.

About Kids' Classes:
The lessons in our kids' classes are conducted in a strict and traditional manner. However, we also have a warm and positive atmosphere at our Dojo, so the kids experience intense and challenging lessons while having fun at the same time.

・"Jizokuryoku". . . endurance.
・"Kiryoku". . . spirit/mental toughness.
・"Jiritsushin". . . sense of independence.
・"Taeshinobu kokoro". . . the heart to bear - perseverance.

In our modern society, kids often do not have the chance to acquire these five attributes. By acquiring these through Karate, they will become healthier in both body and mind. Also, they will learn to have self-respect, which will make them respect others as well.

"REIGI"(courtesy):

The laws of honor (etiquette) are the basis of human communication and behavior. We try to acquire manners like the ones listed below by practicing them during trainings:
・ When entering the Dojo (training hall), bow standing.
・ Before and after the lesson, sit in a kneeling position (Seiza) and bow with appreciation towards Sensei and the Dojo.
・ When called, answer clearly and loudly.
・ Do not cut across in front of others.
・ Remember to keep a suitable distance between yourself and others.

"JIZOKURYOKU"(endurance):

When starting Karate, the first goal we set is to become a "black belt". Kids today are able to get what they want quickly. But in order to achieve a black belt in Karate, it takes more than six years of consistent hard work. There is nothing else like this in the world today that requires such long hard work. For this reason, when the kids finally get the black belt, the joy will be tremendous.

"KIRYOKU"(spirit/mental toughness):

Today, there are problems like bullying and truancy at schools. Children, who become victims of bullying or are truant, lack in "Kiryoku". By learning Karate, they will be able to acquire the mental toughness necessary to defend themselves against people who violate their dignity.

"JIRITSUSHIN"(sense of independence):

Karate is an individual art. During tournaments, you must fight alone in front of a large audience. No one will lend you a hand. You must decide everything on your own. Through this experience, a true independent individual will be born.

"TAESHINOBU"(the heart to bear - perseverance):

When it's hot, turn on the air conditioner. When it's cold, turn the heater on. We live in a comfortable environment inside the house throughout the year. But in the Dojo, during the hot summer, kids sweat, and during the winter, some kids get uncomfortably cold. By accepting natural things as natural (like summer is hot, and winter is cold), you realize that human beings do not rule nature, but instead are kept alive by nature.
